I want to...
President's Update
May 2008

It’s hard to believe another year has gone by. It’s even harder to believe I am now in my fourth year as your president! We have accomplished much together, and I am both inspired and energized by the magnitude of those accomplishments.

Over the past year, we have seen our campus grow and prosper. Together, we have been there
—for the launch of a new Grambling State University food court featuring a Burger King, China Express and Starbucks, not to mention the much-anticipated renovation of the bookstore and student dining hall.  We began Phase II construction of Tiger Village, the University’s new 800-bed residential complex for freshmen students, a housing community which will re-make the face of our campus from its opening day in Spring 2009. We then will have constructed new housing containing 2000 beds in the last two years.

The new Fine Arts Building, headquarters for GSU’s world-famous Marching Band and site of a new theater slated to be the primary stage for GSU drama students, will also open in 2009.

We have revised and strengthened our general education program and received approval for a new degree program in Film Studies this semester.

Such changes do not happen by accident. They underscore the imperative of GSU and all institutions of higher learning to both meet and anticipate the needs of an evolving society.  In doing so, we must be prepared to rethink what we do and how we do it, and explore new pathways, some of which may lead us in entirely new directions.  At this moment in our history, GSU is faced with unprecedented pressure to maintain academic quality, equity and access while coping with dwindling financial support from the public. I believe we are well-positioned to meet this challenge.

Right now, we are undertaking vigorous fundraising with alumni and friends who believe in GSU’s commitment to future generations.  Your own financial support could make a huge difference in the University’s first-ever Capital Campaign, whose initial goal of $30 million will be achieved if we sustain current momentum through the Campaign’s 2012 deadline. In fact, we may well go beyond this goal as we seek funding for new financial support for students, professorships for faculty and competitive programs which can only lead to new and expanded opportunities.

When our campaign is complete, we will continue to emphasize private support as fundamental to the future of the University.  This means we will have to do better adjusting to new fiscal realities through exceptional stewardship of resources and the establishment of an endowment assuring the stability and growth of GSU over the long term. A strong and growing endowment will allow us to carry out our mission and adapt to change.

I am attaching a pledge form for you to complete by indicating your pledge payment and mailing it to Grambling Black & Gold Foundation, c/o Division of Institutional Advancement, P.O. Box 587, Grambling, LA 71245

In closing, I want to thank you for everything you do to keep Grambling State University at the leading edge of learning and change.

It continues to be my privilege to serve this University and I am grateful for the abiding support of GSU alumni and friends.  I look forward to joining all of you as we set new pathways for Grambling State University, accomplish new heights and secure new learning environments for the 21st century.
